Double Chocolate Oat Waffles

These double chocolate oat waffles are an easy, chocolatey breakfast made with simple ingredients. Blending oats into flour keeps them hearty while cocoa powder and chocolate chips make them rich and chocolatey. I love topping mine with a drizzle of honey, powdered sugar, and flaky sea salt for the perfect sweet-and-salty finish.

the recipe

Double Chocolate Oat Waffles

Prep: 5 minutesCook: 5–7 minutesTotal: 10–12 minutesServings: 2 waffles

Ingredients

  • 1 cup oats
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 3 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tbsp cocoa powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Chocolate chips, for topping

Instructions

  1. 1

Blend the oats: Add the oats to a blender and blend until they become a fine oat flour.

  2. 2

Make the batter: Add the milk, maple syrup, egg, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt directly to the blender with the oat flour. Blend until smooth and everything is well combined. Let the batter sit for 2–3 minutes to thicken slightly while your waffle maker preheats.

  3. 3

Cook the waffles: Preheat your waffle maker according to its instructions and lightly grease it if needed. Pour half of the batter into the waffle maker. Sprinkle chocolate chips over the batter, then close and cook until the waffle is set and crisp around the edges, about 2–4 minutes, depending on your waffle maker. Repeat with the remaining batter to make the second waffle.

  4. 4

Top and serve: Transfer the waffles to a plate and top however you like. My favorite combination is a drizzle of honey, powdered sugar, and flaky sea salt.

Lauren's Note

  • Add as many or as few as you like. Mini chocolate chips work especially well because they distribute evenly throughout the waffle.
  • Any milk you like will work. Almond or oat milk are both great options.
  • Make sure the oats are blended into a fine flour before adding the remaining ingredients for the smoothest batter.

Frequently asked questions

Yes! Blend the oats into flour and store it in an airtight container until you're ready to make the waffles.

You can, but I prefer sprinkling them directly onto the batter in the waffle maker. This keeps them from sinking and gives you little pockets of melted chocolate throughout.

These are delicious with powdered sugar, honey, maple syrup, whipped cream, fresh berries, or extra chocolate chips. For my favorite sweet-and-salty combination, use honey + powdered sugar + flaky sea salt.
